Laura's Take on Kohlrabi Gratin

Well if you have read my posts before, you know that I never seem to have all the ingredients I need when I begin a recipe.  This time is no exception.  If you read the other post Kohlrabi Gratin Without the Leaves I hope you enjoy my take on it.

  1. Had some bacon that I chopped and browned in a pan.
  2. Added thinly sliced onion, thinly sliced kohlrabi and garlic
  3. Seasoned with salt and pepper.
  4. Sprayed an over-proof dish with non-stick spray and put all the prior ingredients in.
  5. Took a small container of Half and Half (minus a splash from a cup of coffee!) mixed a tablespoon of flour in it and added it to the pan.  De-glazed it with the liquid and threw in a bit of chicken stock.  (I didn't have any milk.  Note put on shopping list!)
  6. Next threw in a handful of shredded cheddar cheese and stirred until melted.
  7. Poured it over the kohlrabi mixture.
  8. Topped with Panko breadcrumbs and covered with foil.
  9. Cooked in a 400 degree oven until bubbly (about 20 minutes) and removed foil.
  10. Continued to cook until the breadcrumbs were lightly toasted.
And there you have it.  Delicious and easy and using what I had in my kitchen.  On another note, I am so not a fan of nutmeg in my savory food so I would have left that out even if I had it!
