Well if you have read my posts before, you know that I never seem to have all the ingredients I need when I begin a recipe. This time is no exception. If you read the other post Kohlrabi Gratin Without the Leaves I hope you enjoy my take on it.
- Had some bacon that I chopped and browned in a pan.
- Added thinly sliced onion, thinly sliced kohlrabi and garlic
- Seasoned with salt and pepper.
- Sprayed an over-proof dish with non-stick spray and put all the prior ingredients in.
- Took a small container of Half and Half (minus a splash from a cup of coffee!) mixed a tablespoon of flour in it and added it to the pan. De-glazed it with the liquid and threw in a bit of chicken stock. (I didn't have any milk. Note put on shopping list!)
- Next threw in a handful of shredded cheddar cheese and stirred until melted.
- Poured it over the kohlrabi mixture.
- Topped with Panko breadcrumbs and covered with foil.
- Cooked in a 400 degree oven until bubbly (about 20 minutes) and removed foil.
- Continued to cook until the breadcrumbs were lightly toasted.
And there you have it. Delicious and easy and using what I had in my kitchen. On another note, I am so not a fan of nutmeg in my savory food so I would have left that out even if I had it!
