Your Apples this Week

I have it on good authority (that would be Brad) that we will be receiving Ginger Gold and Zestar apples in our share this week.  So if Mother Nature does not change our minds, here are a few facts about each.

Ginger Gold
 Description/Taste

The early season Ginger Gold apples have a pale yellow skin with slight russeting (brown spots) on the surface. It has a crisp, cream-colored flesh with a sweet, mildly tart taste. The flesh has a fine texture and does not oxidize right away when cut, making for a nicer appearance in fruit salads and as a fresh-cut snack. The sweet apple also has a sharp flavor that provides a slight spiciness.

Applications
Ginger Gold apples keep their shape when cooked, so they are great for tarts or pie apples. Make an early season apple sauce with a sweet and somewhat spicy flavor. These pale apples are a great fresh out –of-hand snack. Add Ginger Gold apples to a Woldorf Salad for some added crunch. The apple keeps well refrigerated for up to three months.

Zestar
Description/Taste
Zestar!™ apples are medium to large in size, growing up to three inches in diameter. The mid-western apples have a yellow-green skin with contrasting orange and red striations, giving the fruit a rosy blush on over 60% of its skin. Zestar!™ apples have a crisp, white flesh and a sweet-tart taste with notes of brown sugar.

Applications
Perfect for both fresh eating and cooking, the crisp texture of Zestar!™ apples lends well to pies and pastries. The trademarked apples brown easily; toss in lemon juice after slicing or dicing prior to adding to salads or cheese boards. The early season apples are known for making great caramel apples, or serve them sliced with warm caramel or other dipping sauce. Zestar!™ apples will store for 6-8 weeks refrigerated.
