Basil leaves with holes

Hello Bloggers,

I had a question from one of the shareholders.  The asked... "My basil leaves got holes in them; I had to cut most off. The plant looks very scruffy -- what do you think happened? It has been outdoors, on the deck, under the eaves of the roof, on a table. I have been watering it about every other day..."

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hello! Brooke here - sounds like the work of Japanese beetles and/or Crickets. You can get a Japanese beetle trap and put it anywhere within 15 ft. of the plant .. that is a good way to crontrol them without using sprays or pesticides.

Also make sure you use a fertilizer on the plant in addition to watering it. Using only water is not enough nutrition and the plant will be weak and turn yellow.

Final suggestion is tranfer it to a larger pot if you have not already transplanted it.

Hope this helps!

we have had in the past, tiny red spiders that enjoyed chewing holes in all my herbs. Their Moms love our covered porch, where they build their webs and lay their eggs, faster than we can remove the webs.
